If your home is large enough and has unused space such as a basement or attic space an ADU can be added in existing space. Using existing space is the most economical option, but provides some challenges in relation to building codes and meeting requirements for fire separation and utilities.

An addition to your home is the second most economical option because it is easier to tie into your existing utilities and mechanical systems.
